Women in Politics forum Report Overview
Myanmar is currently going through a historic period of transition, engaged in a struggle for democracy and human rights. The Spring Revolution, which has lasted 1,350 days, is approaching a decisive phase for revolutionary success. As we enter a period requiring more strategic approaches to intensify the revolution, we must also transform the deeply rooted authoritarian culture into a federal democratic culture.
While achieving national equality and building an inclusive political landscape are revolutionary goals, it is equally crucial to secure women's political decision-making rights. Gender equality and women's empowerment are mutually reinforcing concepts. Women's leadership participation in politics, socio-economic affairs, and various sectors is essential for building a just society.
Although women are actively participating in this revolution, they remain underrepresented in decision-making positions. Additionally, we must not forget the human rights violations women face, including conflict-related sexual violence. It is crucial for the Spring Revolution and society as a whole to prioritize increasing women's decision-making power by valuing their participation.
The "Women in Politics Forum" was jointly organized by the National Unity Government's Ministry of Women, Youth and Children Affairs (MOWYCA) and Politics for Women Myanmar (PFWM) on October 27-28-29, 2024. MAP Foundation provided additional support for this forum.
The main objectives were to:
• Identify and implement crucial actions for swift revolutionary success
• Reduce gender-based discrimination to build a fair society
• Enhance women's representation in decision-making positions
The forum discussed:
• Current Myanmar political situation
• Promotion of new leaders in politics, economy, society, and women/youth sectors
• Future direction of the Spring Revolution
• Gender-based violence and conflict-related sexual violence
• Building an equitable society.
Participants also analyzed reasons for women's low political participation, promotion of new women leaders, and sexual violence occurring during the revolution.
Key outcomes included:
• Identifying methods to strengthen the revolution
• Exchanging knowledge on women's rights and equality
• Developing strategies to increase women's participation in decision-making
• Establishing approaches to build stronger networks among politically active women.
This forum represented an important step in enhancing new women leaders' political participation, amplifying their voices, and increasing their influence on revolutionary outcomes. It marked a turning point for women in politics and laid a strong foundation for future initiatives.
